Sugar-Free Gulab Jamun Recipe
Gulab Jamun is one of India’s most loved desserts, traditionally soaked in sugar syrup. In this recipe, we replace regular sugar with Good Sugar Monk Fruit Sweetener, allowing you to enjoy the same rich flavor while reducing refined sugar in your diet.
These gulab jamuns turn out soft, juicy, and perfectly sweet, making them ideal for festivals, family dinners, or whenever you're craving something indulgent.
Ingredients
For the Jamun Dough
-
1 cup milk powder
-
¼ cup all-purpose flour (maida)
-
½ tsp baking soda
-
2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
-
½ cup milk (adjust as needed)
For the Syrup
-
2 cups water
-
⅓ cup Good Sugar Monk Fruit Sweetener
-
3–4 green cardamom pods (lightly crushed)
-
Few saffron strands (optional)
-
1 tsp rose water (optional)
For Frying
-
Ghee or neutral oil
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Sugar-Free Syrup
Start by preparing the syrup so it is ready when the jamuns are fried.
-
In a wide saucepan, add 2 cups water and bring it to a gentle boil.
-
Add Good Sugar Monk Fruit Sweetener and stir until completely dissolved.
-
Add crushed cardamom pods and saffron strands for aroma.
-
Let the syrup simmer for 5–6 minutes on low heat.
-
Turn off the heat and optionally add rose water.
The syrup should be warm, not thick. Gulab jamuns absorb syrup best when it has a light consistency.
Step 2: Prepare the Dough
-
In a mixing bowl, combine milk powder, all-purpose flour, and baking soda.
-
Add ghee and mix gently using your fingers.
-
Slowly add milk, a little at a time, and bring the mixture together into a soft dough.
-
Do not knead too much — just combine until smooth.
The dough should feel soft and slightly sticky, similar to a soft paneer dough.
Let the dough rest for 5–10 minutes.
Step 3: Shape the Jamuns
-
Divide the dough into small equal portions.
-
Roll each portion between your palms to form smooth balls.
-
Ensure there are no cracks, as cracks can cause the jamuns to break while frying.
Tip: Lightly grease your palms with ghee while rolling.
Step 4: Fry the Gulab Jamuns
-
Heat ghee or oil in a deep pan on low to medium heat.
-
The oil should not be too hot — moderate heat ensures even cooking.
-
Gently drop the jamun balls into the oil.
-
Fry while stirring gently so they cook evenly on all sides.
-
Continue frying until they turn deep golden brown.
This usually takes 6–8 minutes.
Step 5: Soak the Jamuns
-
Remove the fried jamuns using a slotted spoon.
-
Immediately place them into the warm monk fruit syrup.
-
Let them soak for at least 1–2 hours.
During this time the jamuns absorb the syrup and become soft and juicy.
